Kawasaki FC420V-DS00 engine. Coil or regulator problem?
This is a John Deere 240 riding mower. The tractor eats spark plugs like candy. The other day it shut off and wouldn’t start so I replaced the spark plug again. This time the mower will not start. I cleaned the carburetor and checked to make sure that it was pumping fuel. I checked the spark and I am not seeing very much. I even put a screw driver in the spark plug cap to see how bad I would get zapped. The shock was like a static shock. I know from past experience this should actually hurt. Could this be the coil or a regulator problem? Any help would be appreciated.
There are a number of things this could be. It won’t be a regulator problem unless the battery goes dead or overcharges. The regulator has no effect on the ignition unless the battery is going dead.
You say it goes through lots of plugs. What do they look like? Are they gas fouled, oil fouled or carbon fouled? Ignition problems will generally produce a plug with dusty black soot.
If there is no spark or the tractor backfires and misses while running there is a good chance it is the triggering coil. This is a little silver chip on the side of the block on early models. I replaced a good number of them. It is very rare to have a generating coil go or bad flywheel, but I have seen flywheel keys shear off and mess up the timing if something is hit hard enough to kill the engine. The secondary or final coil will normally either not spark or stop sparking when hot. Check the plug cap and wire for corrosion. I usually insert a spark checker on the wire and go mowing. You can get these for under $10 and can see the spark in a glass tube while mowing. It takes all the guess work out.
Here is what I would do. Charge the battery and give the tractor a complete tune-up. Wash the motor fins, set the valves, change oil, clean the carb and fuel filter, air filter, etc. Check that the electronic fuel shutoff on the bottom of the carb is working. If it doesn’t shut off, you carb can flood when you shut the motor off. Do a compression test also. Tight valves or a worn motor will foul plugs like crazy.
So it could be a spark problem or not. These aren’t like the old battery coil ignitions that will toss you on your butt if you hold the plug wire. Most have a very small spark that often can’t be seen unless you are in the shop or shade. E-mail me if you need more info. Valve setting is .17mm by the way.
