Antique corn picker elevator shield?
I’m finishing repairing an antique single-row PTO driven corn picker ( no idea what Make ) and am questioning the necessity of one of the shields. At the lower end of the elevator the sheet-metal shield/ access door on the underside where the drive gear is located has rusted away. I was thinking of making a replacement, but then in analyzing the mechanics of how the elevator operates thought that perhaps leaving this lower end open would allow any excess fines or debri to fall free from the chain and paddles as the elevator cycled, rather than allowing them to be trapped and build-up in that area. Other than covering the elevator’s drive gear for “safety” I see know disadvantage to not replacing the shield. Am I over-looking something in terms of how the operation would be adversly affected by the lack of this shield? I’m not “restoring” the machine for looks, but rather to harvest a few acres of corn I plant for Winter feed. Any helpful thoughts would be appreciated.
Leave it off. That shield was obviously designed as a safety device, but it’s location on the underside of the machine makes accidental contact with the chain and gear unlikely. The amount of debris and moisture that is allowed to collect there when the shield is in place is an aggravating problem and can best be solved by keeping the shield off. Hang a rubber “mud flap” at the rear of the opening as a deterrent to anyone reaching straight into that area, if you wish, but as you guessed, keeping it off will allow any debris to fall free of that area.
