From 1860 to 1861, the pony Express severed as a delievery service for letters and samll packages between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. The riders could cover a distance of 1,966 miles in 10 days for an average of 8.2 miles per hour.
In 2007, a small package was sent via the U.S. Postal Service from Scranton, PA, and was delivered 5 days later in Chicago, Illinois(766 miles).
The U.S. Postal Service and the pony express picked up a set of exams in Alanta Georgia at the same time and delivered the exams to the American School in Lansing, Illinois(about 700 miles away).
How long would it take for each of the services to deliver the package?

Pony Express
- travel 1,966 miles in 10 days
- average 8.2 miles per hour
- this equates to 1966 / 8.2 = 240 hours
- this appears to be non-stop service since 240 hours / 10 days = 24 hours / day
U.S. Postal Service
- travel 766 miles in 5 days
- assuming non-stop service, 5 days * 24 hours/day = 120 hours
- so 766 miles / 120 hours = 6.38 miles per hour
For the Pony Express to deliver a package 700 miles:
700 miles / 8.2 miles/hour = 85.37 hours
85.37 hours * 1 day / 24 hours = 3.6 days (rounded)
For the U.S. Post Office to deliver a package 700 miles:
700 miles / 6.38 miles/hour = 109.72 hours
109.72 hours * 1 day / 24 hours = 4.6 days (rounded)
